Myths of Project Management Certification Debunked
Here are five common myths about certified project managers.
Myth#1: Certified Project Managers are trained and capable to handle any situation.
Myth#2: Certified Project Managers will slot right into your unique project management methodology (or lack thereof).
Myth#3: Certified project managers are always more effective than non-certified and experienced project managers.
Myth#4: Certified project managers are project miracle workers.
When a project is over-budget and behind schedule then assigning a certified project manager to the project will solve all the project problems.
Myth#5: Certified project managers will convince the organization of the value of project management, solve all staffing issues and implement effective project management methodologies without support from senior management.

Who believes these myths? No project management certification organization promotes these myths. No remotely mature PMO or organizational manager believes any of these myths.
Certification provides a common language and framework to operate from to develop as a project manager. I was able to deliver projects prior to my PMP. I am able to grow and participate in a community of discussions regarding improving my capabilities and the state of project management because I have this common language and framework.

Fully agree Dennis. I have found that managers not skilled in project management principles have unrealistic expectations of PMP holders.
PMP holders and mature PMOs definitely see the folly of these myths.

I have published an article a while ago about the PMI PMP Certification, what's interesting is the comments on the article, especially the first one (by Dr. PDG), which I think aligns with your thoughts. From the comment:
Do you really believe that taking a 35 hour training course, submitting 4,500 to 7,500 of UNVERIFIED experience and taking a 200 question, multiple choice exam, which only requires a passing score of ~62% qualifies you as a “professional” anything?

I agree that the PMP is one step along the path of an exciting journey in Project Management. Other certifications may be more rigorous and more highly valued in some circles. Either way, learning more about the profession of Project Management and obtaining a certification, makes the holder more knowleadgeable and valuable than not putting forth the effort to achieve the certification.
